Donate to MND:

Motor neurone disease (MND) affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle function. This leads to diverse outcomes for everyone, gradually eroding lives, step by step, word by word, and breath by breath. Sadly, it’s a terminal and incurable condition that deprives individuals of everything.

Former Leeds Rhinos scrum-half Rob Burrow CBE received a diagnosis of motor neurone disease in December 2019, merely two years after concluding his illustrious playing career by leading Leeds to a record eighth Super League Grand Final victory, and once again brought MND to the public’s attention. But there are so many others Doddie Weir, Stephen Hawking, Mike Gregory plus many others who have sadly passed away.

There are approximately 5,000 adults in the UK currently grappling with MND. On average, six individuals receive an MND diagnosis daily. The MND Association is dedicated to enhancing care accessibility, financing research endeavours, and advocating for those living with or impacted by MND.

It is with sadness that one of our esteemed members Frank Heffernan has recently been diagnosed with this disabling decease; And as Rob’s impact has galvanized numerous individuals to join the fight against MND. Now Frank is wanting to do the same.  He isn’t expecting you to replicate the incredible feats achieved by Kevin Sinfield CBE, such as the Ultra 7in7, where Kevin embarked on a monumental journey from Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh to Old Trafford in Manchester in just seven days, covering an average of around 40 miles per day. Nor is he suggesting you undertake challenges like Kevin’s previous endeavours, including the 7in7—seven marathons in seven days in November 2020—or The Extra Mile, a 101-mile run culminating at Headingley Stadium a year later.

His aim is to raise money and awareness of MND by organising an event with the help of friends and family to be held at Fulneck Golf Club on Sunday 29th September, starting at 8:00 and finishing late.

Plans so far:

A thirteen team four Ball Better Ball Pair Stableford, team event over 18 holes.  The entry form is below:

What to expect on Sunday 29th September 2024.

Imagine a perfect day, dedicated to fun, laughter, and making a difference. The day begins as the sun rises, and we gather with our friends, family, and colleagues at a scenic golf course. The air is fresh, and there’s a buzz of excitement as everyone gears up for a friendly round of golf. As you tee off, there’s a sense of camaraderie, with plenty of light-hearted banter and the occasional cheer for a great shot. The game is played with a spirit of fun, knowing that each swing and putt is contributing to a greater cause—raising money for those in need.

By midday, the golf winds down, and the scent of a BBQ fills the air. Everyone heads over to the patio area, where the grill is fired up, and a delicious spread awaits. There’s something for everyone—juicy burgers, grilled veggies, marinated chicken, and all the classic BBQ sides. You pile your plate high and find a spot under the shade, where you enjoy your meal surrounded by friends, with the sound of laughter and conversation all around.

The afternoon is filled with more activities and entertainment. A bouncy castle for the kids (and the young at heart), and you can hear their giggles as they jump and play. Music plays in the background, setting a lively, upbeat atmosphere. There’s a mix of everyone’s favorite tunes, making it impossible not to tap your feet or even dance a little.

As the day progresses, there’s a series of raffles with amazing prizes to be won. People gather around as the numbers are drawn, hearts racing with anticipation. Each winner is greeted with cheers and applause, and there’s a sense of joy in knowing that all proceeds are going towards helping those in need. The raffles add a layer of excitement and bring everyone together in a shared cause.

Throughout the day, there are also moments to reflect on why you’re all there—to support a cause close to your hearts. Brief speeches or reminders from our organisers highlight the impact of the funds being raised, creating a powerful sense of purpose amid the fun.

As evening falls, the day transitions into a more bouncy vibe. The music continues, but now with a, more popular  playlist as the sun sets in vibrant hues. People gather, enjoying the lingering warmth of the day and the satisfaction of having contributed to something meaningful. The atmosphere is one of contentment, with everyone feeling grateful for the time spent together and the good that has come from it.

Our day ends on a high note, with everyone leaving with full hearts and a sense of accomplishment. It’s been a day of fun, connection, and most importantly, making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most, and Frank has had a cracking 7oth birthday party!

Texas Scramble, or as I like to call it, “Golf’s Group Project,” is one of the most popular ways to play golf in teams of two, three, or four.

In its most basic and least confusing form, everyone on the team gets to swing away at every shot. After everyone has taken their turn at bating—oops, I mean teed off—the team has a powwow to decide which drive won the gold star. Once the best drive is chosen, everyone trots over, places their balls at that spot, and takes their second swing from there. It’s like a team-building exercise, but with lots of discussion and more golf balls!

From these second shots, the team again picks the favourite, and everyone plays their third shot from that spot—like déjà vu, but with more frustration. This rinse-and-repeat process continues until the ball finally finds its home in the hole. At the end of each hole, the team turns in a single score, and the team with the lowest total score for the round wins. So, basically, it’s a game of “follow the leader,” but with more arguing over whose shot was actually the best!
